The last incense is called ghost incense, and there is a saying of "burning incense to attract ghosts" in ancient times, which is the meaning. Some sects specialize in cultivating ghosts, so they put on an incense. The three incense sticks are more common, and in Buddhism, they represent the three Buddhas, namely the Buddha of the past, the ancient Buddha of the lamp, the present Buddha - Shakyamuni Buddha, and the future Buddha - Maitreya Buddha.

The four incense sticks are generally monks in the temple, and the fourth incense stick is for oneself, bless oneself to go to the west after death, and the folk also call the four incense sticks "the incense of the house". Therefore, it is best not to put on four incense sticks in the family, witches and goddesses (gods and Hans) go to five incense sticks, the fourth is for themselves, and the fifth is for their descendants. Shenmen and Daomen also have five incense sticks, which means five emperors and five elements.

The Divine Gate and the Witch Gate sometimes also have nine incense sticks, nine is the highest level, meaning nine heavens, meaning nine palaces. Other amounts of incense are extremely rare, and are only used by those who specialize in practicing special spells. For example:

People who practice gossip and eight techniques sometimes burn two sticks of incense, which means yin and yang, and eight sticks of incense mean gossip. Seven incense, which means the seven-star Beidou array, or Tiangang incense. The six branches mean Liuhe incense, that is, the heaven, earth, and people (including yin and yang) Liuhe.
