Compassion is the foundation, convenience is the door.
As one of the three jewels of "Buddha, Dharma and Sangha", the monks take it as their responsibility to purify sentient beings and practice the bodhisattva path. The main spirit of the bodhisattva path is embodied in the compassion of "relieving happiness and relieving suffering" for all sentient beings. Therefore, Liang Shen Yue of the Southern Dynasty pointed out in "The Theory of Ultimate Compassion":
The teachings of the Buddha are righteous and compassionate. "Compassion is the foundation of all good deeds. But compassion alone is not enough.
Transforming sentient beings also requires the wisdom of power and ingenuity that varies from time to time, from place to place, and from person to person, which is called the "door of convenience". For example, the third volume of Tang Voyeur's "Lotus Sutra Xuanzan" explains: "If there is a good thing, it is said to be a prescription, and it is convenient to help at any time."
It is said that the Buddha has 84,000 convenient methods to transform all sentient beings. In the fourth fold of Ruyuan Zhu Kai's "Haotian Tower", the elder said: "As a monk, compassion is the foundation, and convenience is the door.
Compassion is the foundation, convenience is the door. The Buddha is skillful and convenient, or does he use all kinds of words to bring out this matter, or does compassion show it for us and make us enlightened. All contact in life is called the "door of convenience", but in convenience, if you are pure, or equal, or enlightened, the door will be found.
Ordinary people can't find the door inside. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas taught us that there is a door in our daily convenience, and it is here that we enter. Therefore, "although there is a lot of convenience", we must know what convenience means, that is, daily life, dealing with people, bit by bit, all of which are convenient.
How can we have a pure mind in all circumstances? This is to learn the same in the midst of fate, silence is unchanging, and movement is changing. Whether it is good or bad, good or bad, there is no need to pay attention.
In daily life, how to deal with people and things, how to treat people in the right way. People have good roots that are ripe, there are good roots that are not ripe, there are no good roots, there are different types, you have to have a high degree of wisdom, you have to have ingenious methods, so that all sentient beings can benefit, all have joy, this is called the door of convenience, the door of convenience is incredible.
