The ancestors of Montenegro were the Illyrians, who were conquered by the Romans in the 3rd century BC. After the decline of the Roman Empire, Illyria fell into the hands of the Goths. The Byzantine Emperor Justinian I took possession of this area again.
In the 6th and 7th centuries AD, some Slavs crossed the Carpathians and migrated to the Balkans, where they merged with the local Iria. In the 9th century, the Montenegrin region was founded as a state of "Duklia" for the first time. In 1516, Montenegro became a theocratic state centered on Cetinje.
The monarch is a bishop who combines political and religious powers. In 1851, Montenegro became a secular principality again. In 1876 Montenegro declared war on the Ottoman Empire and seized a large amount of land.
Montenegro was officially recognized as an independent state at the Berlin Conference in 1878. In 1910, Grand Duke Nicholas I of Montenegro was officially crowned king. During World War I, Montenegro joined the Entente to assist its ally, Serbia, and was invaded by Austria-Hungary.
In January 1916, Montenegro was completely occupied by Austria-Hungary. After the First World War in 1918, some ethnic groups of the South Slavs formed the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, and in 1929 the country was renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, of which Montenegro became a part. After the end of the Second World War, the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia was established on November 29, 1945, and changed to the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1963, consisting of the six republics of Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina (referred to as Bosnia and Herzegovina), Macedonia and Montenegro, and the two autonomous provinces of Kosovo and Vojvodina.
Montenegro became one of the six union republics of Yugoslavia. Between 1991 and 1992, the four member states of Yugoslavia declared independence. Montenegro and Serbia became the last two remaining republics of Yugoslavia.
On 27 April 1992, the two republics of Serbia and Montenegro united to form the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY). On 4 February 2003, the Parliament of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia adopted the Charter of Serbia and Montenegro and changed the name of the country to "Serbia and Montenegro" (Serbia and Montenegro). Under the Charter, the two republics have the right to decide their independence by referendum after February 2006.
On 21 May 2006, Montenegro held a referendum, at which the official vote count showed that the voters who voted voted were in favour of independence, exceeding the independence standard set out in the Montenegro Referendum Act of 55 per cent. On 3 June 2006, Montenegro declared independence.
