He Qifang (1912 2 5-1977 7 24), formerly known as He Yongfang, was a native of Wanxian County, Sichuan. In 1929, he was admitted to the Chinese Public School in Shanghai, and published new poems. In 1931, he entered the Department of Philosophy of Peking University and began to publish his works in journals such as Modern Times and Literary Quarterly in Beijing and Shanghai.
His poems are included in the "Han Garden Collection" collected with Bian Zhilin and Li Guangtian. The collection of essays "Painting Dreams" expressed symbolic poetry with brilliant prose and created an independent lyrical prose style, so it won the literary prize of Ta Kung Pao in 1936. After graduating from university in 1935, he successively taught at Nankai Middle School in Tianjin and Laiyang Rural Normal School in Shandong.

He Qifang (1912-1977) was a modern essayist, poet, and literary critic. Formerly known as He Yongfang, he was born in Wanzhou, Sichuan, in an old-fashioned family. In 1929, he went to Shanghai to study at the preparatory department of the Chinese public school, and read a lot of new poems.
From 1931 to 1935, he studied at the Department of Philosophy of Peking University. During his college years, he published poetry and prose in magazines such as Modern. In 1936, his poetry collection with Bian Zhilin and Li Guangtian was published, and his prose collection Painting Dream Record was published in 1937 and won the Ta Kung Pao Literary Gold Medal.
After graduating from university, He Qifang successively taught at Nankai Middle School in Tianjin and Laiyang Rural Normal School in Shandong.
After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, He Qifang returned to his hometown of Sichuan to teach, while continuing to write poetry, prose, essays, etc. In 1938, he went north to Yan'an, taught at the Lu Xun Art Institute, and later served as the director of the Lu Yi Literature Department.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he was mainly engaged in literary research and criticism, and participated in the leadership of the literary and artistic circles for a long time. He used to be a member of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the secretary of the Chinese Writers Association, and the director of the Institute of Literature.
