Translated as:In March of the 51st year of Kangxi's reign, when I was locked up in the prison of the Criminal Department, I saw that the prisoners were dead, dragged out of the holes in the wall, an average of three or four a day, and I didn't feel strange. A Du Jun, who used to be the magistrate of Hongdong County, stood up and said:
This is a plague. Now the days are normal, and there are few deaths; In the past, there were more than a dozen deaths a day. I asked what the reason was.
Some bad guys sit in prison for a long time, and they are in cahoots with the wardens and jailers, and they get fat. There is a man surnamed Li in Shanyin, who was imprisoned for homicide and earned several hundred taels of silver every year, and in the forty-eighth year of Kangxi, he was released from prison for amnesty. Stayed for a few months with nothing to do.
It happened that some of his fellow villagers committed homicides, so they impersonated. Because the law stipulates that if it is not intentional homicide, it must be imprisoned for a long time, and if it is not sentenced to death, it will be 51 years, and the rank will be reduced to the army according to the amnesty regulations.
He sighed and said, "I can't get in here anymore!" "According to the old practice, those who filled the army were all transferred to Shuntianfu to stand by; At this time, it was winter and it was not dismantled, and the dispatch was stopped, and the person surnamed Li still asked to go back to the prison of the Criminal Department to wait for the spring to be dispatched, and the request was repeated repeatedly, but it was not approved, and the boss was not happy!
Holistic appreciation
The prose of the work is a famous "miscellaneous", the material is rich, intricate, and there are many characters, and the author is good at selecting typical cases to focus on described, "miscellaneous" and orderly, scattered and neat, and the center is prominent. If measured by the ancient text "righteousness" proposed by Fang Bao, the rich material is "righteousness", that is, "words have things".
An orderly narrative is the "Fa", that is, "the order of words". The article chronicles the facts of the prison and intersperses it with cold and deep discussions in a shocking narrative. The article recounts the cruelty and gloom in the prison of the Criminal Department and the criminal facts of the collusion of officials and traitors, and profoundly exposes the political darkness of the time.
The full text is divided into four parts.
This essay outlines a dark picture of the prison of feudal society, showing sympathy for some innocent victims, and has a certain significance for exposing the evils of feudal society. The content of the article is complicated, but the author writes concisely and powerfully, without rich rendering, and the demeanor of the characters is vivid. In terms of writing, he selects typical examples in several aspects of prison, and uses the method of first summarizing and describing them, first asking questions, and then giving examples, and always setting questions and answers, highlighting key points, and having a strong authenticity, all of which are worthy of reference.
