The number of ghost paths is huge. How many are there?The Buddha once made an analogy:

The ratio of humans to celestial beings is the earth's soil to a handful of soil in one's hands, the ratio of side-living beings (including very small insects, ants, etc.) to humans is also the ratio of earth-to-earth, and the ratio of ghosts to other-born beings is also the ratio of earth-to-earth and hand-held soil, and the ratio of hell to ghostly beings is the same. It is precisely because of the large number that the merit of giving food is very great, and it can benefit immeasurable ghost sentient beings, and according to the law of cause and effect, the giver will naturally have immeasurable merit and good fortune.

On the other hand, we have been parents and relatives of each other for too long, so to speak, these ghost beings are our parents and relatives, so we are also called mother-like beings. We have the ability and opportunity to give food, how can we let them suffer from hunger and cold, not for merit, but only for family affection, but also for food, so that they can eat a full stomach. At the same time, some sentient beings, after hearing the Dharma mantras, may be directly reborn in the heavenly path or the Buddha realm, which makes us rejoice.

Taoism introduced the concept of "reincarnation", minus the Asura path, and put forward the "five paths":

One is God, God is God, God is God;

The two paths, the gods into the flesh and bones into the form of human gods;

The Three Paths, the gods enter the beasts and the beasts are the beast gods;

When the hungry ghost beings see the heavy rain falling from the sky, they raise their necks and want to catch some rain to quench their thirst, but because of the evil karma they have created, when the rain is a few feet away from them, it will turn into flames and multiply their thirst.

Some hungry ghosts have been annoying others for hundreds of years and cannot be liberated, but once they hear the holy name of Guanyin Bodhisattva, they can be liberated immediately.

It can be seen that whenever and wherever we give water and food, or even spit out a mouthful of water, or accidentally drop food, we must be accustomed to reciting the holy name of Guanyin or the mantra for blessings. If you pass by a deserted place, grass, or woods, you should recite the holy name of Guanyin or the six-character mantra. Inadvertently, it will benefit a lot of hungry ghosts. Inheriting the great mercy of Guanyin, there is no doubt that hungry ghosts and others will gain benefits.

No matter how good the food falls on the ground, you should not pick it up and eat it yourself, but you should pronounce "Hum Mani Horn Mei Yin" and apply it to the hungry ghost by the stove or in the corner of the wall. In ordinary monasteries, every evening class is used to give food to hungry ghosts. Most of the southern urban and rural areas have such customs:

At night, be silent, give something at the intersection or a fixed place, and recite some Guanyin name. These are just the things that we can do in our ordinary ways. And Guanyin Bodhisattva not only gave them food and drink, but also gave them a wonderful celestial body, so that they could leave the path of hungry ghosts and be reborn in the Elysian World.
