I was lovely, lively, and happy until I was 15 months old. That day I fell on top of a glass rabbit and badly scratched one of my eyes and went blind. The doctor said that if I took out this broken eye, my face would be very distorted and scary.
So these scarred, gray, godless eyes stayed with me forever.
People often ask embarrassing questions about my eyes and even taunt me. When playing games with kids, I'm always the "bad guy". I grew up in this discriminatory environment.
But every time my mom noticed that I wasn't happy, she would say to me, "Lift your head up and don't be afraid to face the world." Her words encouraged me to keep going. When I was a little kid, I guess mom meant "Be careful!"
Or you're going to bump into it." When I was a teenager, I always kept my head down and hid my low self-esteem. But I found that if I lifted my head, people still liked me.
In high school, I even became class president – even though deep down, I still felt like a monster. What I really want is to be like other children. When I felt bad, I would run to my mom and cry.
Then she would look at me with loving eyes and say to me, "Lift up your head and face the world bravely." Let them see your heart (no worse than them). "That's it, my mother taught me to be proud."
My mother's love and encouragement for me gave me the confidence to stop doubting myself. Eventually, I can look at other people with my head held high. Not only did I learn to appreciate myself, but I also learned how to give my love.
Now in my house, I often hear the phrase "Lift up your head". Every child in mine has felt the power of this phrase. This is a precious treasure that my mother gave me and a precious gift that I left to my children.
