In July 1984 and August 1987, he graduated from Wuhan University with a bachelor's degree in space physics and a master's degree in radio physics. In September 1987, he began to study for a Ph.D. degree at the Graduate School of the University of Science and Technology of China (Beijing), Chinese Academy of Sciences, researching space plasma detection technology. In September 1990, he received a scholarship to study in the United States, and in May 1994, he received a doctorate degree in radio physics from the University of Maryland.
