Cheng Minde was born on January 24, 1917 in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, to a family of intellectuals.
Father Cheng Zhanlu is a well-known Zhanghui writer in Jiangnan. Mother Dai Zhenhuan knew how to read and etiquette, was good at calligraphy, and used to be a tutor.
Cheng Minde, who grew up in such an environment, has developed the habit of loving reading and thinking diligently since he was a child.
In 1932, he was admitted to the textile department of Suzhou Industrial School (formerly known as Suzhou Institute of Technology), and under the influence of Zhang Congzhi, a mathematics teacher who was teaching part-time at Suzhou Middle School at the time, Cheng Minde developed a strong interest in mathematics. In 1935, Cheng Minde applied for the Department of Electrical Engineering of Zhejiang University, and because of his excellent mathematics results, he was transcribed to the Department of Mathematics by Professor Su Buqing, the director of the Department of Mathematics of Zhejiang University at that time. Thus began his mathematical career.
He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1949.
In 1980, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
He died on November 26, 1998.

He has long been engaged in the research of multivariate harmonic analysis and multivariate triangular approximation, and has advocated the research of pattern recognition and image processing in China. From 1952 to 1955, he was a professor in the Department of Mathematics and the director of the Department of Mathematical Analysis at Peking University.
From 1955 to 1966, he served as deputy director of the Department of Mathematics, Peking University.
From 1978 to 1988, he served as the director of the Institute of Mathematics, Peking University.
1980 - Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
From 1982 to 1986, he served as the chairman of the Beijing Mathematical Society.
From 1983 to 1988, he served as the vice president of the Chinese Mathematical Society.
1986 – Director of the Academic Committee of the Center for Information Science, Peking University.
1988 - Director of the Academic Committee of the "Visual and Auditory Information Processing Laboratory" of the State Key Laboratory.
From 1990 to 1995, he served as the leader of the Academic Leading Group of Mathematics Tianyuan of the National Natural Science Committee.
1991 - Director of the Academic Committee of the Center for Mathematical Mechanization, Institute of Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
He died on November 26, 1998.
