On July 28, 1948, the North China Joint Administrative Committee decided that Shijiazhuang City and Yangquan City should be established as municipalities directly under the Central Government.
On October 1, 1949, Beiping was renamed Beijing and designated as the capital of the People's Republic of China, with Tianjin, Shanghai, Nanjing, Xi'an, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Shenyang, Anshan, Fushun and Benxi as municipalities directly under the central government.
On March 12, 1953, the administrative district of Luda was set up as Luda City, which was managed by the Northeast Administrative Region.
On November 15, 1952, the municipality of Nanjing was downgraded to a provincial municipality and established as the capital of Jiangsu Province.
In July 1953, Harbin was established as a municipality directly under the central government.
In September 1953, Changchun City was established as a municipality directly under the central government.
In June 1954, 11 municipalities directly under the central government, including Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shenyang, Changchun, Harbin, Xi'an, Wuhan Tanlabei, Luda, Anshan, Fushun and Benxi, were downgraded to provincial municipalities.
In February 1958, Tianjin Municipality was downgraded to a provincial municipality and established as the capital of Hebei Province.
In January 1967, Tianjin was separated from Hebei Province and restored as a municipality.
In June 1997, Chongqing Municipality, Wanxian City, Fuling City and Qianjiang Prefecture were separated from Sichuan Province and formed as Chongqing Municipality.
