Lint refers to the cotton that has been deseeded, and the cotton picked up from the cotton field is called seed cotton, and the seed cotton becomes lint after ginning and deseeding. General commercial cotton refers to lint, also known as raw cotton.

Cotton is divided into long-staple cotton and fine-staple cotton according to length, cotton is divided into sawtooth cotton and roller cotton according to processing machinery, cotton is divided into white cotton, yellow cotton, gray cotton and colored cotton according to different cotton colors, and cotton is divided into high-grade cotton and low-grade cotton according to different cotton grades.

Cotton is divided into serrated cotton and roller cotton. The lint processed by the sawtooth ginning machine is called sawtooth cotton, and the lint processed by the leather roller ginning machine is called the lint cotton. The vast majority of cotton in China's cotton market is sawtooth cotton.

After World War II, the main characteristics of the world's cotton production pattern are: First, after the rapid growth of cotton production in the 50s, it began to turn into a slow growth in the 60s. The year-on-year growth of world cotton production and consumption is basically adapted to the growth rate of the world population, and the improvement of human living standards, and is constantly balanced by the lever of international demand.

Second, the total area of cotton planting has not changed much, and the growth of world cotton output mainly depends on the increase in output per unit area. Due to the high value of cotton, cotton-producing countries pay more attention to increasing cotton yields, and China is currently the country with the highest cotton yield, followed by the United States, Uzbekistan and other countries. Third, the pattern of the United States, the former Soviet Union (which has dissolved and been replaced by Uzbekistan) and China in dominating world cotton production has not changed, but the order has changed.

Since the 80s, China has become the number one cotton producer. At the same time, the number of countries producing more than one million tons of cotton has increased from three (the United States, the former Soviet Union and China) to five, followed by China, the United States, India, Pakistan and Uzbekistan. Fourth, in terms of raw cotton consumption, China ranks first in the world, but in terms of raw cotton exports, the United States is still the first in the world.

In recent years, although the cotton output of the main cotton-producing countries has changed greatly between years, the total international cotton output is relatively stable, basically around 19 million tons. Cotton as a necessity of life, in addition to cotton producing countries to consume cotton, other non-cotton-producing countries also have to consume cotton, the cotton they demand must be obtained from the international cotton market, and even some cotton-producing countries because they are also large consumers of cotton, need to import cotton from the international market, which forms a relationship between cotton-producing countries and non-cotton-producing countries, between cotton-producing countries and cotton-producing countries, and between cotton-producing countries, forming a cotton market between the purchase and promotion of the world's import and export cotton market. In general, the vast majority of the world's cotton is concentrated among a few large countries, and the five countries and regions that export the most cotton are the United States, Uzbekistan, West Africa, Australia and Greece, with a total export volume of about 65% of the world's total exports, of which the United States' exports account for about 20% of the world's total exports.

The countries and regions that import more cotton are Indonesia, Mexico, Turkey, Brazil, North Korea, Taiwan and Russia. India, Italy and Japan also imported in 1999. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, it has been a net importer of cotton, but since 1983, China began to export cotton, and resumed importing cotton in 1988, and after 1995, China's cotton import and export volume is relatively small, and the total amount is basically the same.

Harvested directly from the cotton plant by the farmer, the cotton fiber has not been separated from the cottonseed, and it is "seed cotton" that has not undergone any processing. The cotton fibers that are grafted and separated from the seed are called "lint". And cotton in a general sense refers to lint.
