Western values are people-oriented, emphasizing individual freedom, individual struggle, individual talent, social equality, democracy and civil rights.

The following four aspects are particularly important:

1) Valuing the individual. Focusing on the individual, basing on the individual, and taking the individual as the starting point and axis to construct the value system are important characteristics of value modernization. Valuing the individual not only helps to realize the value of the individual and give full play to the individual's wisdom, but also helps to enhance the individual's responsibility to himself and society.

2) Conform to human nature. Constructing a value system in accordance with human nature rather than against human nature[1] is another important feature of value modernization. Adapting to human nature can not only attain a lofty moral realm and a life realm, but also facts have shown that only by conforming to human nature can it be possible to truly resolve the contradictions between individuals and others and between individuals and society, and to fundamentally put an end to the hypocrisy that has existed for a long time in human history.

3) Strict specifications. A value system that attaches importance to the individual and conforms to human nature must be accompanied by strict norms and constraints, otherwise chaos will occur. People must enjoy freedom to the fullest, but this freedom must have a baseline that no one can trample on, and that baseline is the rule of law.

This is also an important enlightenment for us from the modernization of Western values.

4) Moderate guidance. Modern values are based on the reality of the individual, emphasizing that the individual must first solve the problem of his own survival and development, and then consider others, the whole, and even humanity, rather than generally requiring everyone to dedicate themselves to the whole. It is impossible and unnecessary for any society to make every member a saint, and there should be different levels of social value requirements, and one size fits all.

Society should appropriately guide members of society in their pursuit of values in light of their actual conditions, and advance them at different levels, so that people can get their own place within the scope of the legal system and become the people they want to become.

Western values refer to a trend of thought that comes from the Western capitalist world. In particular, the political currents of thought advocated by the Western capitalist countries, represented by the United States, such as constitutional democracy, universal values, civil society, neoliberalism, and historical nihilism, as well as the Western political values they proclaim.

In 2015, Minister of Education Yuan Guiren emphasized: "We must not allow teaching materials that disseminate Western values to enter our classrooms"! Marxism-Leninism, in which the Chinese communists believe, is the representative of advanced foreign culture, and this is also a clear proof that we have never rejected the excellent values of foreign countries.

The main reason why we propose today to strengthen the management of the use of the original Western textbooks and never allow the textbooks that disseminate Western values to enter our classrooms is that as a large number of Western cultures have entered China after the reform and opening up, the teaching, scientific research, management, and evaluation systems of some colleges and universities have gone so far as to focus only on "foreign atmosphere" and ignore right and wrong, and some disciplines such as economics and law have even directly used the original Western textbooks with many ideological errors, resulting in "the West admits it or not, and the West approves or disapproves" The purpose of this issue is to prevent the further spread and spread of erroneous trends of thought in the West, and to further strengthen the value and self-confidence of the Chinese people by "discarding the dross and taking the essence of it," rather than completely rejecting Western values and culture.
