The three long months of Ramadan refer to fasting during the three-month period of the first month, May, and September. Skipping food after lunch is called fasting. According to the Sutra of the Four Heavenly Kings, the five and nine are the months of Ramadan, because the Emperor of Heaven and the Four Heavenly Kings observe the good and evil of people in this month, and people should eat vegetarian fasting to cultivate good fortune.
1) In the first month, the Emperor of Heaven released a large treasure mirror, and the first month shone on the southern Ganbu Continent to observe the good and evil of people. In addition, the king of Bishamen in the north inspected the four continents, and the first month was in the south of the continent, which was also like the mirror shining, so the people of the south continent should eat vegetarian food in this month and fasted and cultivated. (2) In May, the Emperor of Heaven released the Great Treasure Mirror, from the first month of the month to the south of the province, in February to the west of Quyeni, in March to the north of Yu Danyue, in April to the east of the Fu in the catch, to May to re-shine on this continent (South of the continent).
The king of Bishamen in the north also returned to Nanzhou in May. (3) In September, the Emperor of Heaven shone on the southern Ganbu Continent from May, and in June, July, and August, he took the first round of the three continents, and in September, he revisited this continent, and the same was true for the Heavenly King of Bishamen in the north. According to the four years of the orthodox volume of the Liberation Gate, during the Tang Dynasty, the law of three long fasts was extremely popular, in this March, the country does not punish and does not kill animals, which is called the month of slaughter and the month of breaking.
The six days of Lent refer to the 8th, 14th, 15th, 23rd, 29th, and 30th days of each month (the 28th and 29th of the month). 【Six Lent Days】 [Out of the Sutra of the Four Heavenly Kings and the Sutra of Adding One Aham"] Those who fast on the six days of fasting, according to the Vibhasha Treatise, do not eat at noon on any day of fasting. It is clearly recorded in the Buddhist scripture "The Treatise on Great Wisdom" that if you do not fast on the six fasting days, you will endanger your health, be prone to serious illness, and make people unstable and auspicious.
Therefore, Buddhist monks often teach sentient beings: on the six fasting days, you should eat vegetarian food and recite the Buddha, and reflect on yourself; After noon, you are not allowed to eat any more food.
The historical evolution of Lent
The Ramadan day of Taoism is the earliest creation of the ancient Lingbao Sutra under the influence of the Buddhist Ramadan fasting day, and the Heavenly Master Tao in the Eastern Han Dynasty has not been influenced by Buddhism, there is no Ramadan fasting day, only three meeting days. Whether it is the sixth day of the month of Han Buddhism or the tenth day of the month of Taoism, which imitates Han Buddhism, it includes the 15th day of fasting.
According to research, the 15th day of the month can be said to be the oldest and most important fasting day in Buddhism, and Indian and Chinese Buddhist documents record that both monks and lay people must fast on this day to keep the precepts, chant sutras and recite Buddha, copy scriptures and make statues, etc., and do all kinds of meritorious deeds. In China, the 15th day of the first lunar month is not an important date except for the 15th day of the first lunar month, which is said to have been established during the Western Han Dynasty. The fifteenth day of each month is important, and it is a phenomenon that only existed after Buddhism was introduced to China.
