Throughout the ancient poems of the Tang Dynasty, there are few poems that embody the word satire so vividly. As a result, the core of "irony" has become a question worth asking us. Let's start with the poem:
Yao Chi Li Shangyin.
Yaochi's mother's window opened, and Huang Zhu's singing voice was moving.
Eight horses travel 30,000 miles a day, and King Mu will not do it again.
The four-character ancient poem is arguably one of the most common genres, and this Yaochi is no exception, as it seems to tell a few unrelated stories. It's just that that's all Li Shangyin wants to express?
Above the Yao Pond, the window of the Queen Mother of the West opens to the east. Hearing the singing of "Yellow Bamboo Song" moved the world. King Mu of Zhou has eight horses that travel 30,000 miles a day, why did he break the contract and stop coming?
The poem uses an allusion to King Mu of Zhou's meeting with the Queen Mother of the West. And the whole poem is basically composed of this allusion. King Mu of Zhou once visited Kunlun Mountain, where he met the Queen Mother of the West, who feasted King Mu and agreed to meet again.
After that, King Mu of Zhou continued to travel the world, and when he saw the suffering of the people, he composed "Yellow Bamboo Song". Li Shangyin does not mention King Mu's subsequent actions, but we can know from the poem.
Li Shangyin used a legend to construct the entire psalm. The Queen Mother of the West and King Zhou Mu reached an agreement, so there was a scene that the Queen Mother of the West was waiting for, but she couldn't wait for King Zhou Mu, only "Huangzhu Song" echoed in her ears. This is a metaphor that King Zhou Mu has passed away, and only the song is sung in the world, which is extremely desolate.
In fact, the dramatic ending of King Zhou Mu is used as a metaphor for the unwise act of the emperor at that time to blindly seek immortals.
Huangzhu Song was born out of the suffering of the common people, and its use here reflects the suffering of the people, in stark contrast to the emperor who sought immortality, which is a satire on the royal family.
Let's look at the last two sentences. The Queen Mother of the West has been looking forward to it for a long time but has not seen King Zhou Mu coming, and King Zhou Mu himself can come to the meeting with a BMW of thousands of miles. However, even the true "immortals" like the Queen Mother of the West cannot shake the established fate of mortals, and cannot change the seemingly concise trajectory.
This is meant to be a satire on those who pursue hypocrisy, who are stubborn and have gained countless infamy.
As for the comment that this poem is "the most thoughtful and the most ingeniously worded", it is completely reasonable. Compared with the commonplace satirical poems, Li Shangyin's work does not use direct and indirect words to express its spiritual core, but from the perspective of commenting on legends and stories, it seems to be just a commentary poem.
The wonderful thing is that this place is also the identity of King Mu of Zhou, which makes it easy for people to connect with people at the level of rulers in reality, and then dismantle it with the methods commonly used in analyzing ancient poems, and the spiritual essence of this four-character poem is clearly presented in front of our eyes.
Ji Yun commented on this poem as follows: "All the words are full of meaning, and they are swallowed out with interrogative words, so they are exhausted." Li Shangyin's technique can be described as difficult to distinguish between fiction and reality, so it has created the unique status of "Yao Chi", which makes people read it with endless aftertaste.
-
Because Yao Chi is a pool in the sky, and the sky is actually not emotional, so Yao Chi represents a kind of love that cannot be satirized, satirizing men's feelings for women.
-
Because Yaochi is a place where those ** nobles will go to play, it can be said to be very extravagant, and it is used to satirize those nobles who don't do anything.
-
This is because Li Shangyin used some myths and stories to satirize the absurdity of those emperors of the late Tang Dynasty who were superstitious about the way of the gods in order to pursue longevity, so as to sympathize with the poor life of the people.

Yao Chi is a seven-character quatrain composed by the Tang Dynasty poet Li Shangyin. This poem is based on the myth of King Zhou Mu's journey to the west and the immortal Queen Mother of the West, ridiculing the emperor's vanity of seeking immortals. The whole poem fictionalizes the storyline of the Queen Mother of the West who cannot look forward to the return of King Mu of Zhou, hinting at the deceased King Mu, showing the inevitable opposition between the delusion of seeking immortals and death.
This poem was conceived based on the legend of the Queen Mother of the West and King Mu of Zhou who met each other. The author grasped the point that the Queen Mother of the West hoped that King Mu would "come back" and that King Mu might promise to come back, and fictionalized a plot of the Queen Mother of the West looking forward to the return of King Mu: The Queen Mother of the West pushed open the window with carved decorations and looked to the east, but there was no trace of King Mu, and only heard the sound of "Yellow Bamboo Song" to mourn the earth.
The first sentence is the beautiful scenery of the fairyland, and the second sentence is the poignant scene of the world, forming a strong contrast. This contrast has two meanings: one is a metaphor that the person who wrote the song is dead, but his singing voice is left in the world, although the fairyland is beautiful, how can he not get it, implying the irony of seeking immortals.

1. It expresses the Tang Dynasty's worship of Taoism, mainly related to the maintenance of the sanctity of its rule. And many emperors died by taking pills because of superstition and immortality. This poem borrows the story of "The Biography of Mu Tianzi" to talk about lovesickness and grief.
2. Original text: Yaochi's mother's window opened, and Huang Zhu's singing voice was moving. Eight horses travel 30,000 miles a day, and King Mu will not do it again.
3. Translation: The carved window of the Queen Mother of the West on Yaochi is open to the east, and only the sound of "Yellow Bamboo Song" is heard shaking the earth and the hearts of the people are sad. King Mu of Zhou has eight horses that can travel 30,000 miles a day, why do you break the contract and don't come again?
