Wang Anshi was a native of Linchuan, Fuzhou (now Linchuan County, Jiangxi Province) and one of the eight great families of the Tang and Song dynasties.
In the second year of the reign of Emperor Xining of the Song Dynasty (1069), after Wang Anshi became the prime minister, he was determined to reform and implement a new law, but was resolutely opposed by the big landlords and big bureaucrats, and was dismissed within a few years. He was bored in the capital, and decided to go back to Nanjing to see his wife and children.
In the spring of the second year, Wang Anshi went south from Bianjing to Yangzhou, and then took a boat west back to Jinling (Nanjing, Jiangsu Province), and when he passed through Jingkou (Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu Province) to Guazhou, which was across the river, the boat docked at the wharf and did not go anymore. He stood on the bow of the boat, looking westward, but saw that the green mountains were faint, the river was surging, the spring breeze was green, the bright moon was in the sky, and he was touching the scene, and he missed the relatives of Jinling Zhongshan (also known as Purple Mountain) even more. He walked into the ship, took out a pen and paper, and after a little thought, he wrote a poem entitled "Docking the Boat Guazhou":
Jingkou Guazhou is a water, Zhongshan is only separated by a few mountains.
The spring breeze has come to the south bank of the river again, when will the bright moon shine on me?
After writing, Wang Anshi felt that the word "to" in "the spring breeze and the south bank of the Green River" was too dead, and he couldn't see what the scene was when the spring breeze arrived in the south of the Yangtze River, and lacked poetry. Later, after thinking about it, I felt that the word "pass" was inappropriate. Although the word "pass" is more vivid than the word "to", it writes the dynamics of the spring breeze passing by, but it is still not enough to express the eagerness of wanting to return to Jinling.
So the word "pass" was circled and changed to the word "in" and "full". After changing it more than ten times, Wang Anshi still did not find the word he was most satisfied with. He felt a little headache, so he stepped out of the cabin to enjoy the scenery and give his mind a break.
Wang Anshi walked to the bow of the boat, looking at the south of the Yangtze River, the spring breeze blowing, the grass swaying, the wheat waves undulating, it looks more vibrant, the scenery is picturesque. He felt refreshed, and suddenly saw the spring grass green, this "green" word, isn't it the word I was looking for? The word "green" expresses the vibrant and spring-like moving scene of the entire Jiangnan.
Thinking of this, Wang Anshi was so unhappy, he hurriedly ran into the cabin, took out another piece of paper, and changed the sentence "the spring breeze to the south bank of the Yangtze River" in the original poem to "The spring breeze and the south bank of the green river".
In order to highlight the hard-won word "green" that he repeatedly scrutinized, Wang Anshi specially wrote "green" a little bigger, which is very eye-catching.
The word "green" makes the whole poem very colorful, and the whole poem comes alive. This "green" word has become what later generations call the "poetic eye". Later, many articles on refining characters took him as an example.

The background of the creation of "Docking the Boat Guazhou": In 1070 A.D. (the third year of Shenzong Xining), Wang Anshi was appointed as the prime minister of Tongping Zhangshi and began to implement the reform. However, due to attacks by opposition forces, he was forced to resign from the post of prime minister several times.
This poem was written in February of the eighth year of Xining (1075 AD), which was the second time Wang Anshi visited the prime minister and entered Beijing.
Original text: Jingkou Guazhou is a water, and Zhongshan is only separated by a few mountains.
The spring breeze and the south bank of the Green River, when will the bright moon shine on me.
This is a well-known lyrical poem, which expresses the poet's deep feelings of looking at the south of the Yangtze River and missing his hometown. Literally, this poem reveals a sense of nostalgia for his hometown, and a great desire to cross the river and return home with his relatives. In fact, between the lines, there is also a strong desire for him to return to the political arena and implement a new policy.

Wang Anshi, a famous writer in the Northern Song Dynasty, is not only good at prose creation, but also good at quatrains. His quatrain poems are novel in meaning, concise in language, and strong in style. His "Docking Boat Guazhou" is a very influential seven-character quatrain:
Jingkou Guazhou is a water, Zhongshan is only separated by a few mountains. The spring breeze and the south bank of the Green River, when will the bright moon shine on me. The word "green" in the third sentence "spring breeze and the south bank of the green river", according to the eighth volume of the Qing Hongmai's "Rong Zhai Continued Writing", the people of Wuzhong possessed the author's original manuscript, "Chuyun' went to the south bank of the river again', circled to the word 'to', noted 'not good', changed to 'pass', recircled and changed to 'in', and changed to 'full', where it is ten words, it is determined to be 'green'. ”

There is a lot of controversy about the emotion contained in this poem. Some people think that Wang Anshi is expressing his determination and self-confidence to reuse and promote the new deal, because of the bright sentence "The spring breeze is on the south bank of the Green River". Some people also think that he was disheartened after two deposes, and had completely lost confidence in the implementation of the new policy, and instead began to miss the quiet life of Jiangning's family.
In fact, no one knows what Wang Anshi thought when he was standing here at that time. It was Mr. Linchuan's lifelong dream to implement the New Deal, and it should be good news for him to be reactivated, but after the start of the New Deal.
Who can guarantee that this time will not end in defeat as before? So standing between the waters of Guazhou and Jingkou, on the ferry of this life's advance and retreat, he was contradictory and didn't know where to go. But he has already crossed the river, how can he turn back?
History proved his worries, and the New Deal ended in failure, and he ended up depressed in Jiangning's home.
Forty years later, Kaifeng fell into the hands of the Jin, and after the Northern Song Dynasty in 167, the Han people began their dream of restoring the country for more than 150 years, and finally understood their weakness and incompetence under the iron heel of Mongolia, which straddled Eurasia.
Since ancient times, most of China's reforms have ended in failure, whether it is Wang Anshi or the later Wuxu reform.

"Docking the Boat Guazhou" is a seven-character quatrain composed by the Northern Song Dynasty writer Wang Anshi.
Translation: Standing at the Guazhou Ferry, looking south, there is only one Yangtze River between Jingkou and Guazhou, and Zhongshan where I live is hidden behind several mountains. The warm spring breeze once again blew the fields in the south of the Yangtze River, when will the bright moon shine on me and return to my home at the foot of Zhongshan.

"Docking Guazhou" refers to the current Guazhou Town, Hanjiang District, Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province, and "Docking Guazhou" is a seven-character quatrain composed by the Northern Song Dynasty writer Wang Anshi. This poem is not only lyrical and allegorical in the scene, but also full of emotion in narrative, with an open realm and a fresh style. The full poem is:
Jingkou Guazhou is a water, Zhongshan is only separated by a few mountains. The spring breeze and the south bank of the Green River, when will the bright moon shine on me.
The first sentence of the poem "Docking the Boat in Guazhou" reveals a relaxed and happy mood by writing about the short distance between Jingkou and Guazhou and the speed of the boat; In the second sentence, the poet looks back at Zhongshan, where he lives, and feels reluctant; The third sentence describes the scenery of the south of the Yangtze River full of spring; Finally, it ends in a questioning tone, once again emphasizing the longing for his hometown.
The opening scene of the poem not only has a sense of excitement, but also forms a powerful contrast between the proximity of space and the length of time through exaggeration, which directly approaches the emotional burst of "when will the bright moon shine on me" at the end, which has the tendency of a silver bottle to burst.
